A sus 32 años, el Abg. Mgtr. Raphael Steeven Banda Tapia se ha consolidado como uno de los profesionales lojanos con mayor proyección en el ámbito del derecho médico, una rama jurídica tan compleja como indispensable en un sistema de salud que, en muchos casos, enfrenta tensiones permanentes entre la práctica clínica y la justicia.
Nacido en Loja, Banda ha construido su carrera a partir de una mezcla de disciplina académica, compromiso social y una vocación marcada por vivencias que lo conectaron tempranamente con la importancia del conocimiento profesional como herramienta de transformación. “Desde muy joven entendí cómo una decisión tomada con rigor y humanidad puede cambiar la vida de una persona”, sostiene.
Formación que cruza fronteras
Su camino educativo inició en Loja, pero pronto se extendió más allá de las fronteras nacionales. Estudió la educación básica en su ciudad natal y continuó el colegio en Colombia, país donde vivió durante ocho años y que marcó una etapa de crecimiento personal y cultural.
Al regresar al Ecuador, su formación universitaria tomó rumbo firme: estudió Derecho en la Universidad Nacional de Loja, donde obtuvo su título profesional. Años después, profundizó su preparación académica con una Maestría en la Universidad Católica de Cuenca, fortaleciendo su visión técnica y ética frente al ejercicio legal.
Actualmente, continúa capacitándose a través de cursos, programas de especialización y estudios complementarios que alimentan su práctica profesional. La actualización permanente forma parte esencial de su filosofía de vida.
Una vocación nacida de la empatía y la experiencia
Su gusto por esta profesión —explica— no provino de una sola influencia, sino de un conjunto de experiencias personales y ejemplos cercanos que lo llevaron a descubrir el poder de la justicia en la vida real. “El deseo de ayudar y de hacer las cosas correctamente fue lo que me llevó a escoger el camino que sigo hoy”, comenta.
Ese impulso se convirtió en una carrera sólida que ha transitado por instituciones públicas y privadas, en diferentes provincias del país. Aunque ha ejercido principalmente en Loja y en Quito —ciudad donde trabajó más de tres años—, su visión profesional se ha enriquecido al convivir con distintos escenarios, demandas y realidades del sistema de salud ecuatoriano.
La esencia de su oficio: defender a profesionales, pacientes y familias
Raphael Banda se especializó en un campo tan sensible como necesario: la defensa jurídica en casos relacionados con el ámbito médico. Su labor, asegura, le ha permitido ser testigo de momentos marcados tanto por la satisfacción como por el dolor humano.
Defiende a profesionales de la salud, a familias que buscan respuestas y a pacientes que han atravesado situaciones críticas. “Cada caso ganado o cada conflicto prevenido es un pequeño territorio recuperado para la verdad y la dignidad”, afirma.

Aunque su vida laboral es intensa, Banda mantiene espacios donde cultiva lo que le da equilibrio: leer para ordenar ideas, mover el cuerpo siempre que puede, cocinar algo sencillo, viajar cuando el calendario lo permite y disfrutar tiempo con las personas que aprecia. En sus ratos libres escribe, aprende y busca un poco de calma entre responsabilidades.
Mirada al futuro: aportar a un campo que aún necesita crecer
Su visión de futuro es clara y ambiciosa. Se proyecta fortaleciendo su carrera en el derecho médico, ampliando el alcance de su ejercicio profesional y especializándose en áreas vinculadas a la gestión sanitaria y a nuevas conexiones entre ley y medicina.
Entre sus aspiraciones también está desarrollar proyectos de formación para profesionales de la salud, aportar en reformas jurídicas que mejoren el sistema, y construir espacios donde la justicia y la atención médica converjan con humanidad, transparencia y eficiencia.
“Quiero seguir creciendo, aportando y dejando una huella útil en este campo”, asegura.
La mayor recompensa: devolver claridad y dignidad
Para Banda, lo más gratificante de su profesión ha sido comprobar que el derecho puede convertirse en un acompañamiento decisivo para quienes enfrentan momentos difíciles. “Cuando una familia entiende lo que pasó, cuando un profesional aclara una injusticia o cuando un caso doloroso termina con una reparación, aparece la recompensa verdadera”, señala.
Esa posibilidad de brindar claridad, justicia y dignidad a quienes se sienten desamparados es, asegura, lo que sostiene su trayectoria día a día.
Una motivación que no se apaga
“Mi motivación nace de dos fuerzas: la responsabilidad y el propósito”, afirma con convicción. Para él, el derecho médico todavía tiene un camino amplio por construir en Ecuador, y ser parte de ese proceso es uno de sus mayores compromisos.
Cada caso, cada estudio y cada decisión es una oportunidad para contribuir a un sistema más justo, más humano y más informado.
